If you're planning an Orlando holiday for the autumn, chances are you've come across Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party while looking at Disney tickets.
And if you're anything like I was the first time I saw it, your first thought was probably...
"Hang on a minute... I've already spent a small fortune on park tickets. Why am I being asked to buy another one?"
It's a fair question. In fact, it's probably one of the questions I see asked most often in Disney planning groups. The party isn't cheap, especially if you're already budgeting for flights, accommodation, dining plans and everything else that comes with an Orlando holiday. So before you click 'buy', it's worth knowing exactly what you're paying for.
So, put the kettle on and let's have a proper chat about it.
First things first... what actually is it?
Despite the name, don't picture people jumping out at you or haunted houses that will have the children hiding behind you. This is Disney, after all. Think of it as Magic Kingdom throwing the biggest family Halloween party imaginable.
On selected evenings between August and Halloween, the park closes to day guests and reopens for those with a party ticket. Straight away, everything feels different. The music changes, the lights come on, pumpkins seem to appear everywhere and the whole park takes on this lovely autumn atmosphere.
One of my favourite things is simply people-watching. You'll see tiny Tinker Bells, pirate crews, entire families dressed as Toy Story characters and even grandparents joining in. It's one of the few places where everyone embraces the fun, and nobody feels the slightest bit self-conscious.
"But is it actually worth the extra money?"
I'll be honest...
There's no right answer because every family is different. If you're looking for the cheapest way to do Disney, then perhaps not. But if you love those little moments that make a holiday feel extra special, I genuinely think it's worth considering. You're not just paying for a few extra hours in Magic Kingdom. You're paying for an event that Disney has completely transformed.
There's an exclusive parade, special fireworks, rare characters, trick-or-treating, Halloween snacks, Disney villains, shorter queues for many attractions and an atmosphere that you simply won't experience during a normal park day.
It's one of those evenings that feels different from the moment you walk through the gates.
Can we just talk about the parade for a minute?
I'm going to admit something. I'm not usually someone who plans my day around parades. Normally, I'd rather nip on another attraction while everyone else is watching.
But the Boo-to-You Halloween Parade? That's another story.
It's brilliant.
The music is ridiculously catchy (don't say I didn't warn you), the floats are lovely and there's just something about seeing the Headless Horseman riding down Main Street that gives you goosebumps.
Then you've got Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween outfits, Disney villains causing mischief, the Haunted Mansion gravediggers and plenty of little details you'll notice the more you watch.
Even if you're not usually a parade person, I'd make time for this one.
The fireworks are something else too
If you've seen Happily Ever After, you'll know Disney does fireworks incredibly well.
The Halloween party has its own exclusive show hosted by Jack Skellington, and it's packed with projections, music, fireworks and appearances from some of Disney's best-loved villains.
Watching Cinderella Castle lit up with Halloween projections is one of those moments that makes you stop, take it all in and think, "This is why we came."
Yes... adults get to go trick-or-treating too!
This always makes me smile.
When you arrive, you're given a treat bag, and dotted all around the park are trick-or-treat stations where Cast Members happily fill it with handfuls of sweets.
Not one sweet. Not two. Handfuls.
Children absolutely love it, but let's be honest... most adults get just as excited.
By the end of the evening, you'll probably be wondering how on earth you're going to squeeze all the sweets into your suitcase!
One mistake I see people make
Trying to do absolutely everything. Honestly, don't. It's impossible.
If you spend two hours queuing to meet rare characters, you'll probably miss something else. If you spend the whole evening racing between attractions because the queues are shorter, you'll miss the atmosphere you've paid to experience.
Before you go, have a little think about what matters most to your family.
Is it seeing the parade? Watching the fireworks? Meeting Jack Skellington? Collecting as many sweets as possible? There isn't a wrong answer. Just don't feel you have to tick every single box.
My Three Top Tips
🎃 1. Don't treat it as another Magic Kingdom day.
This is probably my biggest piece of advice. The attractions will still be there another day. The Halloween entertainment won't.
If you've already got another Magic Kingdom day planned, use the party to soak up everything that's unique. Watch the parade, enjoy the fireworks, wander around and just take in the atmosphere.
👻 2. Have a slower day beforehand.
The party finishes late, especially if you're staying until the very end (which I'd recommend if you can).
Rather than rushing around another park all day, have a lie-in, spend a few hours by the pool or enjoy a relaxed breakfast. You'll enjoy the evening far more if you're not already worn out before you've even arrived.
🍬 3. Leave a bit of room for the unexpected.
Some of our favourite Disney memories have never been the ones we'd carefully planned. They've been the random character interaction we stumbled across. The Cast Member who stopped to chat. The Halloween treat we hadn't planned to buy. The family photo we nearly walked past.
Disney has a funny way of creating magical moments when you least expect them, so don't plan every minute.
So... would I recommend it?
Yes, I would. Not because I think everyone has to do it. Not because it's amazing value for money. But because it's one of those evenings that just feels... special.
It's seeing children proudly showing off their trick-or-treat bags. It's hearing everyone singing along to Boo-to-You as they leave the park. It's walking down a pumpkin-lined Main Street with Cinderella Castle glowing in the distance. It's those little moments that stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase and the holiday feels like a distant memory.
If your budget stretches to it, and you're visiting Walt Disney World during the Halloween season, I honestly think it's one of those experiences you'll look back on and be really glad you did.
And if you're still not sure? That's perfectly alright too. There are plenty of wonderful ways to enjoy Disney at Halloween without going to the party. But if you're after an evening that's a little bit different, full of atmosphere and sprinkled with that special Disney magic, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is very hard to beat.
